Mesolithic and Chalcolithic Mandibular Morphology: Using Geometric Morphometrics to Reconstruct Incomplete Specimens and Analyse Morphology

چکیده
Abstract Human skeletal remains are routinely used to examine cultural and biological aspects of past populations. Yet, archaeological specimens frequently fragmented/incomplete so excluded from analyses. This leads decreased sample sizes potentially biased results. Digital methods now restore/estimate the original morphology specimens. Such include 3D digitisation Geometric Morphometrics (GM). The latter is also a solidly established method morphology. In this study, we use GM-based estimate incomplete Mesolithic Chalcolithic mandibles originating present Portugal perform ensuing morphological Because mandibular known relate population history diet, hypothesised two samples would differ. Thirty-seven (12 complete 25 incomplete) were CT-scanned landmarked. Originally as reference location absent anatomical landmarks in As predicted, our results show shape differences between which likely due compounded effect contrasting histories diets.

15 صفحه اولA Diachronic study on the Morphology of Mirak Lithic Tools using 3D Geometric Morphometrics and Multivariate Analysis
The study of the morphology of stone artifacts and their spatio-temporal changes in form has gained great importance in Paleolithic archaeology today. This growing attention is due to the prevalent use of advanced multivariate statistical methods in archaeology, the growing connection between archaeologists and the specialists of life sciences (e.g., animal biosystematics) and programming langu...
متن کاملQuantifying temporal bone morphology of great apes and humans: an approach using geometric morphometrics.
The hominid temporal bone offers a complex array of morphology that is linked to several different functional systems. Its frequent preservation in the fossil record gives the temporal bone added significance in the study of human evolution, but its morphology has proven difficult to quantify. In this study we use techniques of 3D geometric morphometrics to quantify differences among humans and...
متن کاملInvestigating Root Canal Number and Morphology of Mandibular Anterior Teeth Using Cone Beam Computed Tomography
Background and purpose: Root therapy will be successful if it is done based on a correct diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan with the knowledge of morphology and tooth anatomy, debridement, disinfection, and obturation of the entire root canal system. This study aimed to investigate the number and morphology of canals in root canals mandibular anterior using cone beam computed tomography (...
متن کاملLeaf Morphology, Taxonomy and Geometric Morphometrics: A Simplified Protocol for Beginners
Taxonomy relies greatly on morphology to discriminate groups. Computerized geometric morphometric methods for quantitative shape analysis measure, test and visualize differences in form in a highly effective, reproducible, accurate and statistically powerful way. Plant leaves are commonly used in taxonomic analyses and are particularly suitable to landmark based geometric morphometrics. However...
